Teachers and students are influenced on a day to day basis to use technology because today's world revolves on it. Although education decades ago was carried on perfectly without technology, it has only made education today much simpler. Access to much more knowledge is gained quicker and easier thanks to technology such as computers, applications and even calculators!

The standards and beliefs of the ISTE are some which I believe more and more people agree with as days progress. As the older generation fades out an a new one takes over society, we find ourselves surrounded by more people who are in favor of a world in which education and technology are paired together. The ISTE standard which I can relate the most to is the Student standard. Though I am an aspiring educator, I can more so relate to students at the moment as I have been a student for the majority of my life; 3d specifically means the most to me as I have learned many things that are not taught to me in a classroom and that are not listed in a curriculum thanks to technology and sources that I have access to on the internet. On the other hand, the standard which I can least relate to is the CS Educator standard. Although I have much experience on computers and have used them almost my whole life, I am not passionate about computers enough to teach other students how to professionally and efficiently use one. The whole standard overall is not something that catches my eye or that makes me feel passionate about teaching.

The "digital native" is one that cannot be generalized to the new generation of children. Although a majority of this generation is tech savvy, there are many children who nonetheless have no interest in the technology of today. Applying the digital native term to a whole generation is too broad and can even be offensive to some people. For example, some people grow up with the idea that technology in fact makes one "dumber" or less intelligent. Labeling someone of this generation a "digital native" when they are not interested in technology is wrongful and personally may harm their demeanor even while others may not agree with them. While one can in fact say that this generation is dominated by the use of technology, there do exist the handful of people who do not enjoy it and are not amused by it. On the other hand, there definitely exist "digital immigrants" who excel using technology and are fascinated by it because of their lack of access to it while growing up. These digital immigrants take advantage of their accessibility to technology and attempt to keep up with it as often as possible given that they possibly viewed their lives more difficult prior to their introduction to technology. Luckily, I very much enjoy technology and believe it makes my life easier-- and my educators in fact try to include technology in as much as they can. Of course, I have come across the typical educator who has needed assistance in turning on a monitor or fixing a powerpoint, however, they are still open to the use of technology and do not have any shame in admitting that they are not as proficient in its' use as us "natives" are. I know that as time proceeds, technology will continue to advance, and I too one day will be the teacher needed assistance or an update on how to use a certain browser or work a certain app.

  1. Karla, I think you thought outside of the box here. I never thought about how it could be hurtful labeling a child as a "digital native", even though one may not have interest in the digital world. I guess, however, labeling a child anything before knowing their interests is hurtful and presumptuous. I included in my article too about how one day we will be the ones needing the help with new tech in the classroom!
