The Flipped Classroom is exactly what its name indicates, the flipped version of your average school environment. In the Flipped Classroom, students come to class already knowing the material that they are supposed to for this designated day, and using the class time to solve problems related to this material in order to better their understanding of it. Flipped Classroom teachers encourage students to think critically and work independently. The Flipped Classroom also gives room for the professor to work directly with each student in order to tackle their difficulties.
The digital divide is the division between students who have access to technology and those who don't, which makes it difficult for them to succeed in school. This divide reduces the lack of resources and information that certain students can access, due to the fact that there are countless amounts of sources on the internet to allow a student to expand their knowledge. Many assignments today are strictly assigned to do on an internet or computer source, restricting numerous kids from being able to complete their assignments in the way that is asked of them by their teachers. Not only this, but it constrains them from obtaining information required for the assignment due to the fact that the majority of today's generation is not familiar with library tool. Unfortunately, the digital divide is mainly to blame due to lack of financial resources. There is a large population of students who have un-employed parents, immigrant parents, or even just parents who are unable to spend money to purchase their children a computer or laptop for them to do homework with. As a teacher, I will ask my students to anonymously report whether or not they have access to technology. If they do, assigning work will be much easier given that I can make one assignment for the entire class. However, if they do not all have access to technology, I will make both paper and electronic assignments and provide resources for them to access the required information for the assignment and allow all students to chose whether they want to do their assignment on paper or online.
The first PowerPoint assignment did not teach me much to be honest. I have been working with PowerPoint for a really long time, so this was nothing new to me. I have created assignments just like this for numerous classes in the past, so this was cake! The only thing I can say I had never done before was record my voice in the background so I guess that was pretty new-- nonetheless, easy. For this second PowerPoint, I cannot say the same though. I have never created something like this before and to be honest, I didn't want to. It was one of those assignments that you second-guess before doing, but I wasn't going to take the "L" either. This second PowerPoint was very tedious to make, nonetheless, it's something I had to do! After struggling a bit, I finally know how to make an interactive PowerPoint which is definitely going to come in handy in the future as a teacher for lessons in class. Peep them down below!

  1. Hey Karla. I took a break on the second powerpoint project and am finishing tomorrow because I felt the same way-whew!
I agree and think the digital divide is something so sad we have to deal with. On a daily the difference of financial stability in the people around me shocks me, and when it comes to education it makes me sad some kids have to suffer because their parents can't provide them with resources other students with more money can. I think it's great you say as a teacher you'll provide paper and electronic versions of assignments because it makes things more fair.

  2. I love the idea of doing online but also paper versions of work to accommodate to those who did not have the proper technology. I also think this is great for those that prefer paper and pencil over electronically doing work. It offers students some autonomy and also helps to make sure certain students do not feel left out if they do not have the proper electronics to do work on. I also struggled on making my powerpoints a bit, but once I got more familiar with the different tools it helped a lot!
